AND ANOTHER THING…
**This was the seventh year in succession that Blues have failed to progress past Round One of the League Cup
**It is also four years since Southend actually managed even so much as a draw – in 2000/1 the competition was over two legs and United lost the home leg 5-0 to Birmingham City before recording a 0-0 draw at St. Andrews.
**It's now a mammoth 523 minutes since Blues last scored a goal from open play – that being Lawrie Dudfield’s 17th-minute strike against Torquay United on 8th May 2004 at Roots Hall.
**In addition to that, it is over eight matches since someone other than a striker (those being Wayne Gray, Lawrie Dudfield and Leon Constantine) netted for the Shrimpers – both Mark Gower and Kevin Maher scored in the 2-2 draw with Hull City.
**Blues last won a fixture ten games ago – that the 3-2 win over Darlington at Roots Hall on Monday 12th April 2004.
**Adam Barrett made his full debut for the Shrimpers, having spent the previous four matches on the bench, and three of those as an unused substitute.
**Nicky Nicolau, Carl Pettefer and Mark Bentley were all making their first appearances in the League Cup.
**Kevin Maher collected his third consecutive booking, and his fourth in five matches to move one away from a suspension. It was only his second caution in the competition.
