Brewers bust Shrimpers

So Luggy has taken the chance on centre-back Bilel Mohsni, though the thigh injury that kept out Luke Prosser probably made his mind up.

EEB is basking in the glory that while he's stuck in Edinburgh he knows more about Luggy's thoughts than people closer to the team re Lee Sawyer, no one likes a smart ass mate, however, he's spot on that Blues boss Paul Sturrock continues, and seems to enjoy, sending out curve balls to the media, and that he is still not convinced by the former Chelsea youth.

We lost a lot of early home games last season by shipping goals so the more defensive line-up, and the capitulation at Crawley must have influenced him, is not a total surprise, as well as giving Kane Ferdinand some more game time to get into the season.

The only concern must be the lack of a real wide player on the left with Jamel Johnson, not that he's been doing much, but there isn't really a natural wide left player in the team unless Luggy moves Ryan out there.

So, to the game, and, oh dear, first minute, Bilel fouls S24 player-to-watch Calvin Zola, it's OK, not a bad one, and I think he's smiling!

Shrimpers keeper Glenn Morris then tips a Aaron Webster header around the post for the first corner of the game.

Southend though seeing most of the ball in the early stages with late replacement referee Tierney stopping and starting the game with minor offences for both sides, then on 20 minutes a real chance, and it's got to fall to the temperamental French Tunisian!

Hall the provider, but Bilel volleys over from only six yards, should have done better really, so three minutes later Hall tries to show him the way to do it with one of his trademark free-kicks, just wide.

However, on the half-hour and with the game going nowhere, Calvin Zola, who has scored against us in the post for Crewe, unleashes a shot that curls around Morris from 20 yards.

I wish EEB hadn't done a preview this week, though he did say we'd end up winning, and there's enough time in the game, a real test though, and Luggy decides to go 4-3-3 with Hall moving further upfield.

Still no shot on target for the Blues as JP Kalala shoots from outside the box but it passes the left hand post.

Another foul on Zola by Mohsni, ref might be getting itchy fingers for his yellow cards.

Half-time comes, plenty of thinking for Sturrock to do, Sawyer certainly, and Johnson possibily, to be introduced at some stage after the break, attacking ideas for the Essex boys are at the minimum, while Ferdy's mind seems to still be stuck in Romania, wonder if Fry is watching!

Poor for United, far too much route one stuff, but the 279 Albion travelling faithful in the 4,794 crowd will just want more of the same, even a fourth league draw in a row will make their trip worthwhile!

And a minute into the second period, with no changes for Southend, it's Ferdinand, the man we would have had off, who has the first attempt on target for the home side with a header form a Hall corner, could say he should have scored but that would be unfair!

Still, a much better start after a few words from Luggy and Coughlan ringing in their ears I'm sure, and is that a Roots Hall roar starting up?

Just before the hour, a Hall corner, a Mohsni header, wide, oh how we miss Barry Corr from those set pieces, followed by another Mohsni effort saved by Brewers keeper Ross Atkins, blimey the guy gives you everything.

66 minutes, Ferdy heads just wide of the right hand post, much more attacking intent by the Blues, but not enough bodies in the box to really test the Albion defence.

21 minutes left and Sawyer replaces the defensive minded Kalala, Luggy going for it now, which he has to of course, and on 77 minutes Johnson for Ferdinand.

Hall and Burton's Jacques Maghoma exchange shots as the game approaches the final whistle, and Graham Coughlan replaces Peter Gilbert.

It's over, a great win for Burton, and after that two opening wins are followed by two successive defeats, back to the drawing board for the management team before next weekend's visit to Port Vale, no easy task.

Southend United player markings: Morris - 7, Clohessy - 6, Barker - 6, Mohsni - 7, Gilbert 4 (Coughlan - 88), Hall 6, Ferdinand 5 (Johnson - 4), Kalala 6 (Sawyer 69 - 6), Grant 4, Harris 6, Dickinson 5.
