SHRIMPERS

I can taste the first pint of Courage Best in the Spread, hope they've cleaned the pipes, as another nine months of ups and downs, laughter and tears, sunshine and rain, sadly the latter falling on to my head through the hole in the west stand roof, bet they haven't fixed it, at least no one has nicked it.

Can we really beat the Bulls for the 10th successive time? Amazing run, in fact, it's been over 30 years sice the last loss at Roots Hall, and it could be said the fixture computer has been kind, but odd things can always happen on the first Saturday.

However, and it seems odd that some goals down the left hand side in pre-season friendlies could see the banishment of full back Peter Gilbert to the bench and the continued presence of Luke Prosser, I can't see past the bookies odds-on offer on a Shrimpers victory.

If Jean-Paul Kalal does his defensive duities well enough he should be watching out for any Jemal Johnson/Ryan Hall runs that leave gaps behind them in the middle, Anthony Grant has to have a license to roam.

Mark Phillips impressive form since his return from injury would allow Luggy the joy of luxury of moving Bilel Mohsni up front to keep Neil Harris from getting lonely, let's face it it should be fun up there with those two working together, hopefully as well as they looked in the second half against Ipswich.

Whatever the starting eleven great to see league footy returning again after the tournament free summer, and let's hope for a big crowd who will go home into the early evening with smiles on their faces, especially the ones following the boys in Blue!

Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Phillips, Barker, Prosser, Hall, Grant, Kalala, Johnson, Harris, Mohsni.

Subs: Bentley, Gilbert, Ferdinand, Sawyer, Dickinson.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!

OPPOSITION

In

Delroy Facey, Yoann Arquin, Harry Pell, Joe Heath, Stefan Stam.

Out

Sam Gwynn, Adrian Patulea, Richard Rose, Ryan Valentine, Daniel Stratford, Aidan Thomas, Sam Malsom.

Hereford defender Michael Townsend starts a two-match suspension having been sent off in the 1-1 draw at Macclesfield Town on the final day of last season.

Midfielder Nicky Featherstone misses out with a foot injury although it is not as bad as first feared and the former Hull City man is likely to return to action in a week's time.

So even after the Pell fainting incident Bulls boss Jamie Pitman may have a squad of only 15 players to choose from, where he will probably start with a defensive 4-5-1 and a kid or two on the bench.

He has to take some blame for this as he refuses to contemplate starting with Janos Kovacs and Sean Canham, who are both on the transfer list and not in Pitman's plans for the season, high wage earners we here.

Hereford United (from): Adam Bartlett, Ryan Green, Tyler Weir, Joe Heath, Stefan Stam, Joe Colbeck, Kenny Lunt, James McQuilkin, Rob Purdie, Harry Pell, Kyle McCarthy, Stuart Fleetwood, Delroy Facey, Yoann Arquin.

www.maxihobbs.com summed them up; Hereford fans are quietly confident about the forthcoming season. Although the bookies will assume Hereford will struggle, Jamie Pitman took the reins and in general did a solid job last season. Now he has had the chance to assemble a squad Hereford should be looking up, rather than over their shoulders. However, if they continue as generous in front of goal as they were last season the Bulls fans could face another tense season on their hands.'

Player to watch:

Facey: Pens Bulls deal

Delroy Facey

Facey, who left Lincoln City after they were relegated from the Football League, signed a one year deal with the Bulls.

The Grenada international scored three goals in as many games against Hereford last season!

The Bulls will be the striker's 11th club since beginning his career at Huddersfield in the mid-1990's!

Again, from the maxihobbs boys: 'An astute bit of business by Pitman here. Facey’s injury was largely regarded by Lincoln fans as their failure to get results in the lead up to their relegation and the stats would only agree with them. Don’t expect Facey to trouble the top scorer charts but his experience in this league is vital, accompany that with his strength and hold up play and Hereford could have a fruitful partnership with Facey and Fleetwood.'

HISTORY

Founded in 1924, Hereford United have played atEdgar Streetfor their entire history and are nicknamed 'The Whites' or 'The Lilywhites', after their predominately white kit, or 'The Bulls' after thelocal breed of cattle.

The club's motto is"Our greatest glory lies not in never having fallen, but in rising when we fall".

Hereford shot to national prominence in 1972 when, as aSouthern League team, theyknocked top-flight Newcastle United out of the FA Cup.In the same season they were elected to the Football League, and reached theold Second Divisionby1976. But after a rapid decline into theFourth Division, where they spent nineteen seasons, they were eventually relegated on the final day of the1996-97 seasonwith serious financial troubles.

Graham Turner purchased the majority shareholding in 1998 saving the club from probable extinctionand, after nine seasons in the Conference, Hereford returned to the Football League by winning the2006 Conference Playoff Final. Turner purchased just two players between 1997 and 2008 for a combined total of £40,000.

At the end of the2007-08 season Hereford were promoted to League One, despite being tipped to struggle,by finishing third inLeague Two.2008-09saw the club play in the third tier of English football for the first time since 1978, but a season of struggle saw them relegated back to the fourth tier on 18 April 2009. Turner subsequently stepped down as manager, paving the way forJohn Trewickto become manager. However, Trewick did not last a full season after a disappointing campaign and was dismissed on 8 March 2010; and Turner once again took over first team duties on a temporary basis.

David Keyte was announced as the new club chairman on 4 June 2010 with Tim Russon as the new vice-chairman.

They appointed Simon Davey as manager on 22 June 2010.Davey was sacked on 4 October 2010 after poor league form. He was succeeded by physio Jamie Pitman who acted as caretaker manager until he was made manager on a full time basis until the end of the 2010-11 season after he had overseen a dramatic turn around in form.

Pitman was rewarded with a two-year extention to his contract keeping him at the Bulls until 2013, unless things go pear-shaped again!
