SHRIMPERS

Well, who would you pick?

And this bloke Anto Flood will be around for the Cobblers match, would actually help if Benyon was injured!

Luggy told the Echo: “Elliot has missed two or three days of training but we hope to have him out there again and we will have to see how he reacts. Hopefully he won’t suffer any kind of reaction and will be fit enough to be involved against Northampton.”

With all this activity up front, and some players should hear they are on their way soon enough if they haven't already, Bilel Mohsni must now be considered a full time centre back, which is probably no bad thing. (Ferdy can also play there if needs must.)

Yet, watch if we're still one down and he's on the bench, even with all these options, Luggy wouldn't be able to help himself!

Ryan Leonard (knee) and Lee Sawyer (thigh will not be available, Ryan for another fortnight it seems, as a win at Sixfields will be the Shrimpers 500th away victory in their history. (Thanks to Chris Phillips of the Echo for that latest fun fact.)

I believe it's too early for Sampson, though that didn't stop him picking Benyon for the Daggers draw when he joined, moreover Liam Dickinson had his best game for ages against Port Vale and deserves another start, I mean who will take the spot kicks?!

It's tough, but presuming Elliot is OK, and after all the excitement of the week, I think he'll start with the same eleven that hammered Port Vale last weekend, with the wingers dropping back more, but a far more exciting bench where Luggs will take a gamble again without a keeper sitting there as Bentley is not in the squad, fit or not! (Bilel to take the green jersey?!)

Just don't drop the ball Glenn!

2-1 Blues!

Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Phillips, Barker, Gilbert, Kalala, Timlin, Hall, Dickinson, Benyon (or Sampson), Martin.

Subs: Mohsni, Grant, Ferdinand, Sampson (or Flood), Harris.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!

OPPOSITION

It was a real blow to the Cobblers when new signing keeper Shane Higgs picked up a long term injury after a couple of stirring displays, so it looks as if last week's choice Freddy Hall will get another chance, pressure on him there lads.

Midfielder Arron Davies could return to the side as he's recovered from a groin injury.

Defender Byron Webster played in a midweek reserve game at Wolves and is close to a recall.

They have been boosted by right back Jason Crowe signing a new deal until the end of the season.

Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd told www.ntfc.co.uk: "Arron has been back in training this week and he is available for selection. I thought Freddy Hall did very well last Saturday so I have still got to make a decision about the ongoing goalkeeping position. I've got one or two irons in the fire and I think we do need to bring in a keeper in to push Freddy. (Luke's available!) Byron Webster has been out for a long time but he is working hard on fitness and like everyone else in the squad he needs to be ready should he be called upon."

Last Time Out

Player to watch

Akwasi Asante

He must have something if he's keeping out our old friend and Town top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa.

On New Years Day, Asante moved to the Cobblers on a one-month loan deal from Championship Birmingham City.

He went straight into the starting eleven for their match the following day, away to Shrewsbury Town, and after 22 minutes he collected a cross from Lewis Young and rounded the goalkeeper to set up the opening goal for Saido Berahino.

The match finished as a 1–1 draw but he followed this up by opening his account when he grabbbed the winner in the 2-1 win against Morecambe, could be annoying if Barker and Phillips are not at the top of their game. (See that goal on the highlights link above.)

GROUND

The Club moved from their old County Ground to the new stadium in October 1994. This neat all seater stadium is located on the outskirts of Northampton. Sixfields has three small covered single tier stands, and another larger single tier covered West Stand (capacity 4,000), at one side of the pitch.

Away supporters are housed at the South Stand end. The club has received awards for the facilities provided for disabled supporters. A large hill overlooks the ground, where small numbers congregate to watch the game free, even though they can only see half the pitch!

Shrimpers will be located in the attractively named 'Paul Cox Panel & Paint South Stand' at one end of the pitch, where 800 supporters can be accommodated. If demand requires it, then an additional 300 seats can also be made available in the Alwyn Hargrave Stand, which we may not need this time around though you can usually get in there if you ask a steward nicely, I did for our 3-2 win there back in 2009.

HISTORY

Northampton Town was founded in 1897 after meetings between the town's schoolteachers and local solicitor A.J. Darnell.

The community then focused on football and, in particular, schoolboy football was strong in the county due in part to the enthusiasm of the local teachers. They were, however, dissatisfied with the current arrangement of arranged friendlies between schools, preferring to teach the boys through practical examples and they felt this could be done by forming a town team.

At the same time A.J. Darnell travelled to Leicester with the local Rugby team, where he witnessed an exhibition football match between Leicester Fosse and Notts County. This gave him the desire to start his own club in Northampton.

Mr Darnell and the local schoolteachers came together through their shared aims and, on 6 March 1897, at the Princess Royal Inn on the Wellingborough Road, Northampton Football Club was formed. Following objections from the town's rugby club the team adopted the name of Northampton Town to avoid trouble.

The club gained permission to play home matches at the County Ground, home of Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, provided that no games were scheduled between May and September; this was to remain their home for the next 97 years until they moved to Sixfields.

Last manager Ian Sampson was sacked on 2 March 2011 after a poor run of form saw the Cobblers fail to win in 8 games and sit in a disappointing 16th position in League 2. Sampson’s last game in charge was a 2-3 defeat against Burton Albion, the manner of this defeat ultimately costing him his job. Sampson’s sacking brought to an end a 17-year association with Northampton, and his commitment to the club has guaranteed his status as a legend in fans' hearts.

Club supremo David Cardoza moved quickly and Gary Johnson was unveiled as the new manager on 4 March 2011. The appointment was greeted by unprecedented approval, so much so that Johnson stated his decision to join the club was partly down to the support for his appointment of a club forum.

Which just goes to show, never listen to fans, as things didn't go well under Gary Johnson at all with the club sliding further down the table in League 2 and only just avoided relegation at the end of the 2010–11 season.

2011–2012 has been no improvement for the Cobblers and the embaressment was only further heightened after a loss to Luton Town on the 12th November 2011 in the FA Cup 1st Round when Johnson left the club on 14 November 2011 by mutual consent to be eventaully replaced by ex-head Farmer Aidy Boothroyd.
