SHRIMPERS

Heads up guys, as Neil Harris tells www.echo-news.co.uk: 'We will stay positive and it's all about making sure we play well on Saturday now.'

And positive is how all those Shrimpers making the 400-odd mile trip to the wet and windy far north have to remain.

We've done OK in the opening games and though Jamel Johnson has to buck his ideas up, must be tempting to keep Kane Ferdinand to shore up the midfield, i hope he sticks with the present formation even for such a difficult away game.

With skipper Chris Barker out, along with strikers Barry Corr and presuming Blair Sturrock as we've had no update, let's hope fellow central defender Mark Phillips has got over his groin problem, we're keep him in for now, but let's face it he doesn't have a great history here.

That allows us to push back Bilel Mohsni, Liam Dickinson deserves another go, just don't give him the spot-kick if we win one!

This will be a good test for the squad and an idea if a promotion push will be possible with the present squad, a draw would be a positive step indeed.

Possible Southend United: Morris, Clohessy, Mohsni, Phillips, Prosser, Hall, Kalala, Grant, Dickinson, Harris, Johnson.

Subs: Bentley, Gilbert, Ferdinand, Sawyer, Crawford.

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!!!

OPPOSITION

Stanley boss John Coleman
could again be without defender Danny Coid after the summer signing has missed both opening games.

Centre-back Kevin Long, on loan from Burnley, should start, while teenage striker Nat Taylor came on for the last six minutes of the 2-0 Carling Cup defeat at home to Scunthorpe will probably return to the bench.

Another central defender in Kern Miller, on loan from Barnsley, is also available.

Coleman, who knows he has his usual tough task to keep his side at the top of League Two, was philosophical about opening the season with a goalless draw last weekend, although he admitted: "We made enough chances to win it."

Accrington side against the Iron: Stanley: Murdoch, Winnard, Miller, Long, McIntyre, Procter, Joyce, Barnett (Murphy 84), Craney, Lindfield (Hessey 84), Guthrie (Taylor 84).

Player to watch

Craig Lindfield

With last season's top scorer Terry Gornell gone to Shrewsbury goals will be harder this time around and the stanley faithful will be hoping that Lindfield may start to show his true potential.

Not a great scoring record but the 22-year old did score 3 goals in seven appearances for the England under-19's during 2006/07.

GROUND

Although the Crown Ground is on the smallish side, it is set in a picturesque area, with views over fields and hills behind the Coppice Terrace at one end of the ground.

On one side of the ground is the Main Stand, which at first glance looks like one stand, but in fact it is comprised of two small stands; the Main & Thwaites Stands. They sit on either side of the half way line, with an open gap between the two. Both are all seated covered stands and have a row of floodlights at the back of them.

To compensate for the fair slope of the pitch which runs up along the ground from the Coppice Terrace to the Sophia Khan End, the Thwaites Stand has less rows of seats than the Main Stand. Both these stands also have an usual array of tubular steelwork, running across the top of them.

Opposite is a very small covered seated area, called the Whinney Hill side. This former terrace had seating installed before the start of the 2009/10 season, in order that the Club could meet Football League stadium criteria of having a minimum of 2,000 seats (further seating was also into the Sophia Khan End). Behind this stand is a relatively new housing development, which overlooks the ground, meaning that some residents can see the game for nothing.

Both ends are fairly new looking affairs, of which the home end, the Sophia Khan Stand covered, whilst the Coppice Terrace opposite is open to the elements. The Sophia Khan Stand looks a little odd, with a terracing at the rear, but with seating at the front, especially when you consider that the stand is quite a small structure.

Another unusual aspect of the ground is that it has a total of eight floodlight pylons, with three on either side of the ground and another being located at one end.

Away fans are mostly housed in the Coppice Terrace where up to 1,900 supporters can be accomodated. There is a mixture of seating and terrace in part of the Whinney Hill side if needs must but unless the weather turns nasty tyhe numbers travelling up should not require it.

As the away end being uncovered this can lead to a lack of atmosphere, with the Blue Voice's finest just not being carried around the ground.

Oh, and showers are forecast, should be fun!

HISTORY

Accrington had been without a football team following the collapse of the original Accrington Stanley in 1966.

The original team had been formed in 1891, and played in The Football League from 1921 to 1961; it had spent its final four seasons in the Lancashire Combination.

In a meeting in the town library in October 1968 the revival was started and in August 1970 the new club played at a new ground, the Crown Ground.

Since their formation, Stanley have climbed the non-League pyramid to reach The Football League. Eric Whalley, a local businessman, took control of the club in 1995 and started the development of the club's ground.

After the club was relegated in 1999, Whalley appointed John Coleman as manager.

In 2005-06, Stanley won the Football Conference and were promoted to League Two, switching places with relegated Oxford United - in a reversal of fortune, the team that had been elected to replace the former Accrington Stanley as members of the Football
League in 1962.

2010-2011 was one of the most successful seasons in the clubs history reaching the Football League Two play-offs. A run of 1 loss in 19 games from February till May saw the club finish in a best ever 5th position, eventually losing to League Two newcomers Stevenage FC in the Playoff Semi-Finals.

In terms of the domestic cups Stanley reached the 2nd round of the Carling Cup losing 2-3 to English Premier League side Newcastle United.

The club actually won the 1st round game of the Football League Trophy away to Tranmere Rovers but where then forced to resign from the competition after fielding the ineligible Ray Putterill in the game.

Stanley also reached the 2nd round of the FA Cup but lost to fellow League Two side Port Vale.
