Yates: Excited about glamour tie

Yates: 'We could have had a lot more goals to be fair'

Robins boss Mark Yates couldn't have been more pleased with his team after Cheltenham has defeated the Shrimpers by a three goal margin in their top of the table clash at Whaddon Road Saturday afternoon, moving within one point of the former league leaders and allowing the creepies to go clear again at the fourth tier's summit.

Yates told www.ctfc.com: "It was a really good performance and I'm delighted with that. We stood up to a really good team in this division and I thought we were deserved winners today. We could have had a lot more goals to be fair. I thought some of our play today was excellent for League Two and there was real quality out there. We also saw the ugly side of it all really well and it was a really decent performance against a strong side."

No doubt Southend were out played in all areas of the pitch, some good work by skipper Chris Barker aside, and loanee Luke Danield could have done nothing about the goals, for the Essex boys it's all about Oldham in the cup replay Tuesday before a return to league action at Roots Hall and Bradford City on Friday.

However, a week off for the Robins until they face Barnet away, also next Friday.

Yates concluded:"The players are working their socks off and we are putting in decent training sessions on for them. We stopped Southend doing what they're good at and we played some decent football. I think this probably is my best spell as a manager and long may that continue. I'm not happy with 41 points after 20 games because I want this club to have a really good season and we can do that by getting our heads down, working hard and churning out results."

Can't argue with that, up to the Essex boys to react and come back as strongly as thay can.
