UPDATE: Aussie Adam Arrives at Roots Hall

With Federici being drafted straight into the side to play Orient Ian Joyce can feel hard done by after a good performance at Crewe.

Federici became an honoury Pom when he arrived in England in 2002 at 17, going on to have trails with Wolves, Bolton and Leeds United before signing for Reading in 2005.

When manager Steve Coppell decided to play a reserve side at Old Trafford against Man. U. in the fifth round of the F.A. Cup Adam was oustanding in the 1-1 draw going on to make his Premiership debut against Spurs.

Federici has only played one other league game while making 10 appearances for the Royals overall, current No. 1 Marcus Hahnemann keeping him out of the league side, but he did play in Reading's defeat on penalties to Stoke City in the Carling Cup last Tuesday.

He owns a Reading contract until next May while joining us on an emergency months loan which could be extended to 93 days but Big Steve should be fit well before then.

Talking to Blues World Adam said about the move: "I need games and Southend United is a great club so I am looking forward to starting against Leyton Orient on Friday. Over the last few years I have been lacking playing regular football and I just need a few matches under my belt to help my career along."

He continued on why he choose Southend: "Marcus has been at Reading a long time and played a lot of games so it is hard to displace someone who is performing week in week out. At some point I needed to go away and play a few games to come back stronger and even more determined. Hopefully I can do that and help Southend out of a situation along the way also."

A nice bottle of Merlot from the Margaret River can be opened with his Reading mate Hal Robson-Kanu as the nights draw in over Southend seafront before they both have to return to Berkshire. Hal certainly helped make up his mind: "Everything happened yesterday with the move and I only spoke to Hal on the way down. He told me he was enjoying it here and having a good time so I am looking forward to playing with him. It was a long game wp in Stoke so I am feeling tired; but hopefully I will have a good night's sleep."

Adam, a mere 23, was playing for the the green and gold of Oz at the Olympic Games in Beijing. They didn't qualify from their group but he held his own against the eventual winners Argentina and enjoyed the experience: "China was unbelivable. I played five games out there in front of massive crowds and great opposition. It was an experience and a half to say the least."

In goal Adam Federici was sensational and Matthew Sprianvic and Jade North had another solid match together in central defence. But the defensive effort belonged to all in gold. Midfielders Billy Celeski and Jams Troisi were immense. Kilkenny lacked poise at times but ran himself into the ground. They ran hard and stayed tightly packed. They played as their coach had asked but it was not quite enough.

Soon after, and with Australia sitting back, Mascherano launched a powerful shot from outside the box that was bound for the corner if Federici had not acrobatically thrown himself left. Minutes later the keeper was again amongst it as the constantly-dangerous Messi received the ball on the edge of the box, beat two men and shot low across Federici. The Reading man was doing well but almost turned villain two minutes later, conceding a free kick on the edge of the box for timewasting. Riquelme hit it just wide.
