Mr. Martin is keen to reward the quintet with new deals as the Shrimpers strive to return to the Coca-Cola Championship at the first time of asking. Both Gower and Flahavan are out of contract in the summer while McCormack and Moussa both have a year left on their existing deals. Bailey also has two years remaining.

Martin said: "We've started talking to a number of players. We're speaking to Nicky, Alan, Mark and Franck about new contracts and it's important we sort it out because we want them to be part of the club's future. It's also on my agenda to start speaking to Darryl about his contract as well."

He is also hoping that the team's fine recent run of form will help for the play-off campaign ahead. The Blues could yet snatch an automatic promotion place in League One, but are likely to have to do things the hard way in the play-offs.

Tilly's side are unbeaten in their last 13 games and Martin believes that that form will be an advantage in the weeks ahead.

He told The Southend Evening Echo: "If you did a league table from January I'm sure we would be top and since Christmas the team has done brilliantly, which has really helped their confidence. That is crucial at this stage of the season when teams are all getting tired, but our players are on a high and hopefully that will help in the play-offs. They are always a bit of a lottery, but hopefully we can keep the run going and get to Wembley."
