O'Connor: A chance to impress Luggy and Coughers this afternoon
The Tractor Boys left-back Shane O’Connor, who can also turn out in midfield, has joined the Shrimpers on trial.
A graduate of the Liverpool F.C. Academy, he received his first professional contract with the Suffolk club in July 2009 when signed by previous boss Roy Keane.
The 21-year-old Cork lad has just returned from a one-month loan spell at Port Vale at the weekend without making a first-team appearance for the club.
The Valiants face Southend on Saturday afternoon at Roots Hall.
Ipswich fansite
www.twtd.co.uk/ tells us:
'Irish U21 international O’Connor, whose Town contract is up at the end of the season, is very much out of (current manager) Paul Jewell’s plans with his only appearance under the current manager a 16-minute cameo as a sub in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at Arsenal last January.'
Oh well, we will wait and report back on how he looks.
Valiants manager Mickey Adams said at the time of taking Shane to Vale Park: 'Shane was available and, with him having a number of Championship games under his belt, we felt it would be a useful addition to the squad. With our current injury situation, I was determined to bolster the squad ahead of the transfer deadline on Thursday evening. I am very pleased to be able to bring in a player of Shane's ability."
Though he didn't play him!
Usually a good judge of a player Adams and he could be promising, early reports from ipswich fans is he's a decent prospect who likes to keep the ball on the ground, more promising for Benyon!
And we certainly need cover in that position with Peter Gilbert losing form, this was a guy selected for the League Team of the Week twice in a row this campaign, and Luke Prosser, well, for being Luke.
Though maybe the Port Vale boss wanted to keep him but hasn't got a say in the matter, the match a week earlier and O'Connor may have been facing us:
