Lee Johnson has been one of the Glovers' key figures this year

Yeovil were comprehensive winners of last season’s Nationwide Conference, but this year it has been play-off winners Doncaster Rovers who have run away with the Third Division promotion accolades as opposed to last year’s champions. In truth, Glovers supporters will probably not be too disconcerted with their inaugural Football League campaign, with its many highs and lows along the way.

Town started the season with two thumping wins, over what have turned out to be two of the division’s whipping boys,
Rochdale and Carlisle United. In a year of runs, the West Country side then lost three on the trot, before piecing together four consecutive victories, including the notable scalps of Doncaster and Mansfield Town. That put them in the promotion hunt, and following three losses in four games, three more wins meant that Blues’ defeat at Huish Park put the home side fifth.

Finally, the weekend after the Shrimpers clash, Yeovil picked up their first League draw, in their nineteenth match, and by Christmas they were unbeaten in five and lying third again, just three points off of Oxford United’s top spot. However, one win from seven left Town’s automatic promotion hopes in tatters, and clinging onto a play-off place by the tightest of margins.

A win over Oxford was another bog scalp, and helped the Glovers to consolidate their position in the top seven, but despite massive wins over Cambridge United (4-1) and local rivals Bristol Rovers (4-0, to complete the ‘double’), three draws and five losses from the next ten meant that the six points gleaned against mid-table Bury and relegation fodder York in the last two matches have put them back in contention – but only just.

Cup form has been decent enough, with a fantastic F.A. Cup win over Wrexham and a large triumph against Barnet. The Glovers bowed out to
Liverpool in a televised match in round three, but only by two goals to nil. Colchester United were fortunate to win 4-2 on penalties after trailing twice in the LDV Vans Trophy second round, but Second Division rivals Luton Town smashed Yeovil out of the Carling Cup at the first attempt. All in all though, a good record for the first campaign in new surroundings.
