Indeed, since 1998/9, when Cambridge won both games (1-0 at Roots Hall and 3-0 at the Abbey Stadium), Blues have emerged unbeaten in five matches against the East Anglians, with four wins and a Boxing Day draw two years ago. The first in that sequence was a 3-1 LDV Vans Trophy victory in January 2001, the season in which Southend reached the Area Final and lost 4-2 to Brentford.
Since then, aside from a Mark Rawle-inspired 1-1 draw with the U’s on Boxing Day 2002, they have run out victorious on Boxing Day 2003 (Leon Constantine aiding a 1-0 win), 1-0 at home in February this year just before that momentous 4-3 aggregate triumph over Colchester United in the area final of the 2003/4 LDV Vans Trophy and 2-1 when Jay Smith scored his first goal for the club in August 2002.
Smith, though, will have unhappy memories of the last meeting between the teams, when a dangerous Warren Goodhind tackle left him requiring surgery on his lower right leg, and he has only just had an operation to remove the metal screws in that area in the past week.
Those wins, though, contribute to an overall record where the Shrimpers have triumphed in half of the meetings between the two teams (14 out of 28) and seven out of the fifteen clashes (which include that LDV win and a 2-0 1974/5 League Cup victory) at the Hall. Indeed, Cambridge have only once netted more than one goal in a game in southeast Essex, way back in 1971/2, whilst Southend have twice won by three goals to one.
