For two sides separated by 160-odd miles and in the north and south of the country, Southend United and Notts County have a rather surprising amount of previous meetings, although the last one was nearly ten years ago in February 1995. To put that into context, both sides were in the new(ish)ly-named Endsleigh League Division One, the Conservative Party was still (unfortunately) in power for the sixteenth consecutive year and Oasis were celebrating six months, and not ten years, at the top of the British music scene.
That last game, at Meadow Lane ended, until now, 65 years of matches between the two clubs, of which Southend had prevailed in 24, County in 22 and eight had ended in stalemate. Of those, the Magpies had the edge two to one in Cup encounters, Blues 22 to 20 in the Football League, but Notts had the biggest win – 6-2 in September 1987.
Andy Edwards bagged one of the Shrimpers goals, just a matter of months before his exit to join the recently-departed Barry Fry at Birmingham City’s St. Andrews, along with Roger Willis. The game ended 2-2, the visitors’ goals coming at the very end of the clash, and Howard Kendall was effectively deposed as County boss. Earlier in the season, Andy Thomson scored the only goal of the game at Roots Hall.
Preceding that were four matches between the two clubs in just under three months. Southend took both home games by a single goal – Ricky Otto netting in the League, midfielder Phil Gridlet in the Anglo-Italian Cup English Final first leg – but tellingly County won as hosts as well. In the second leg, which would see the winners play at Wembley, Southend wasted a good chance in extra time after County had pulled the rearranged match back to 1-1 on aggregate, and Graham Bressington’s penalty miss saw Notts go through.
