33-year-old Prior, who made 156 appearances for his home-town side between 1989 and 1993, and netted four goals in the process, went on to represent Premiership sides Norwich City, Leicester City, Derby County and Manchester City, before joining another former Seasider in Martyn Margetson at Cardiff City. After three years with the Ninian Park club, he was released in the summer and Tilson was quick to approach his former team-mate about a move back to Essex.

However, speaking to the Southend Evening Echo yesterday, Tilson revealed, “I did meet up with Spencer but at this stage he wants to try and play at the highest level he can. He would have done a good job for us I’m sure, but he doesn’t want to drop down to our division at the moment”. The central defender, who has commanded transfer fees totalling £2.7million over the course of his fifteen-year career, will instead continue to hound League Championship and League Division One sides.

Despite that setback, the Shrimpers gave supporters some good news when they revealed that a new television channel is to be launched at Roots Hall for the 2004/5 campaign. 32 televisions will be installed at the ground in time for the August 7th season-opener against Cheltenham Town, and TLG hope that the service will be to the same level of Red Imps TV at Lincoln City, which broadcast pre-match statistics, squad profiles and starting line-ups, as well as video interviews, in the build-up to the day’s big match.
