Tilson happy with result that sees Luton at Roots Hall in next round

Blues boss Steve Tilson, speaking to www.southendunited.co.uk, accepted that Southend, with half the side changed from the game against Tranmere three days ago, were not at their best.

"It was all about getting through to the next round. We have managed that by scoring two goals and keeping a clean sheet as well was also pleasing. It wasen't a fantastic peformance and I thought it was a poor game all round to be fair. We can certainly play better than we did tonight."

He went on to rightfully praise Steve Mildenhall whose saves kept the home side in the tie: "We had to play a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 formation, whatever you want to call it, with players injured or either unable to play in the cup, but that is not an excuse. We did not pass the ball well enough and Mildy has had to make two fantastic saves at an important time when the game was still goalless. The lads certainly owe him a drink! Hopefully, we can keep progressing and get a big tie in the third round."

And in the way of that tie will be our old friends from Bedfordshire, Luton Town.

They drew 0-0 after 120 minutes in tonights replay at Altrincham, but ended up 4-2 winners in a penalty shoot-out with keeper Conrad Logan the hero as 10-man Luton scraped into the second round.

Logan saved Warren Peyton's second-half spot-kick, after Sol Davis brought down Chris Senior and was sent off. The Hatters keeper then thwarted Mark McGregor and Robbie Lawton in the penalty shoot-out before Paul McVeigh slotted in the winning kick.

An otherwise uneventful tie was delayed for 35 minutes by a power cut!

Ties to be played November 28-30

(Grays' FA Cup first-round replay against Carlisle was abandoned after only 20 minutes because of floodlight failure at the Recreation Ground. The non-league side were celebrating Sam Sloma's 20th-minute goal when one of the floodlights failed. An electrician spent 20 minutes trying to fix the problem before the referee called a halt to proceedings. Bad luck for Carlisle supporters, the ref at Altrincham gave their guy 35 minutes to pay the lecky bill!)
