Tilson: 'We should have killed the game off'

Blues boss Steve Tilson spoke about his teams missed chances both before and after Macca had opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw with Wycombe Saturday afternoon.

Tilly spoke to www.southendunited.co.uk: "Once we have gone ahead, we should have killed the game off. We had two fantastic chances, with Francis Laurent missing from four yards when he has to score and Matty Paterson will be disappointed not to do better. It was difficult for Matty today, as he hadn't trained with us and didn't know the players names."

So why start him Tills when you had a scoring striker in Scott Spencer who has at least been with us a while longer and may be on speaking terms with a few of the squad?

Anyway, he went on: "It was a great strike by Josh Payne to get Wycombe back in the game and we then looked nervous. In trying to win the game, we kept getting caught on the counter attack and that was disappointing. We were too loose and too many players did not have the desire to make it difficult for Wycombe to break us down."

So into the Lions Den Tuesday.

Tilly concluded: "It is going to be a difficult season for us and as a squad we need to work hard for each other. There is not a lot of money to get players and everyone at the club has to stick together. We now go to Millwall on Tuesday night, which is not going to be easy, but if we play as well as we did at Leyton Orient and Huddersfield Town, there is no reasion why we can't get a result."

Wycombe manager Gary Waddock

Waddock: 'Don't know what we have to do to win a football match'

Chairboys boss Gary Waddock was, of course, more inclined to concentrate on his team's cock up's in front of goal, Matty Harrold's second half header bringing back fond memories for the Roots Hall faithful.

Waddock told www.wycombewanderers.co.uk: "I don't know what we have to do to win a football match at the moment. We created enough chances for an away side to win two games. A lot of them were good chances as well. We give the players a license to play and they play with a freedom now. That showed in the chances we created, but we have to be more ruthless."

Then Gary went into fantasy land for a moment, was he doing a Arsène Wenger when Laurent and Paterson missed open goals. (Though I will give him Harry's, that was a classic!)

He continued: "They had opportunities as well but ours were more clear cut. If a chance crops up and you miss it, make sure you hit the back of the net next time. I'm disappointed again for the players. A point is good and we can't underestimate that but we have to pick up three. We should have got three points today (Saturday)."
