Tilly to meet Marsh again? - Northwich Victoria or AFC Telford away in the F.A. Cup First Round
Last updated : 27 October 2008 By Shrimpers24
It was April 20 1996, approaching injury time and tha match with Ipswich Town in Division One, the Championship today, was drifting towards a 1-1 draw. A younger Lee Morris, when he had some hair, and myself, moved to the south end of the West Stand, when you could with ease, so we could make a quicker getaway back to the train station. A good thirty yards out Mike Marsh let fly with a shot of such pace and power the Town keeper had no chance, I can still see the net bursting. We had won 2-1 and Mr. Marsh would be any Southend all-time eleven I get round to picking to this day.
So after the sacking of the last Northwich manager, with the team third from bottom of the fifth tier of English football, first team coach Marsh has stepped up to the plate as manager and it would be great to see him again.
Still, one down that they were when the floodlights cut out, Telford are fourth from the top of the Blue Sq. North and only a level below so only six places behind Northwich in the league pyramid, not much in it, though Telford would be less on the mileage clock! Not sure about the pubs yet!

Not for the first time what has happened "off field" has had a disproportianate effect on what happens "on field". On this occassion "floodlight failure" resulted in the early curtailment of an FA Cup tie that surely deserved a more satisfactory conclusion. The players, supporters, with particular regard for the several hundred Telford fans, deserved far better. The background and management of todays events will surely be investigated. Whatever that outcome Northwich Victoria must again have shown themselves to be incompetant in terms of meeting the needs of their own supporters, visiting supporters and their playing staff.
The events of the tie seem almost insignificant but Telford had a chance to take an early lead but a weak Andy Brown finish was easily saved by Tynan. Vics won a corner down the left and the kick by Winn was inadequately cleared leaving Crowell to have a shot blocked and then a follow up cleared off the line before ROBERTS scored from close range. A passage of keenly contested but uninspired play ended with Williams curling a shot wide before the players left the field for a break from which they would ultimately not return.
Team: 4-4-2 Tynan / Aspin, Roberts, Grand, Brown / Williams, Welch, Crowell, Winn / Allan, Burns / Subs not used: Jones , Flynn, Mullan, Benjamin, Farran & Riley
