Sturrock: Fluke goal stunned team

Sturrock: 'What happened simply cannot be tolerated'

In his weekly Echo column Blues boss Paul Sturrock has issued a clear warning to his players that they have to up their game as the second half surrender that saw Southend ship three goals to cash rich Crawley Town on Tuesday evening can not be repeated.

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk: "Our demeanour after conceding the second goal at Crawley in the week was just not acceptable and I’ve had to rattle a few cages at the club this week. What happened simply cannot be tolerated and people will lose their place for tomorrow’s game with Burton because of it. Some will be in the last chance saloon because we want to be in the pecking order for promotion this season and we just can allow what happened against Crawley to happen too often."

Luggy also gave hope to those Shrimpers on the fringe of the squad hope that some may see action in the future, maybe sooner if he carries out his threat to make changes for the visit of Burton Albion to Roots Hall at the weekend.

Sturrock continued: "I’ve also had to have words with those who aren’t in the team at the moment about their performance levels in training and in games as well because we want them to be putting pressure on the players in the team. If they don’t then you can a malaise sweeping through the squad and that also just can’t be allowed. I want to see the right kind of reaction against Burton and we will need it because they’re a good team."
