Sturrock: New Shrimpers boss

Sturrock: 'On our day we can be a good side as well'

After Monday's disappointing Home defeat to Cheltenham Blues boss Paul Sturrock is still confident his side are in with a decent shout against the League's top team.

Sturrock told www.southendunited.co.uk: "They are a good side who have been together for a long time. On our day we can be a good side as well though and we have a habit of performing better against the top teams. We will need to do that again on Saturday and we're desperate to really start putting in some performances at home."

However, though he appreciates it's tough enough to take on and beat a side like Chesterfield, it's even tougher without the home faithful 100% behind the team.

Luggy continued: "I realise that the fans haven't seen the best of us at Roots Hall but all the players really need the crowds backing throughout the match. I understand they can become frustrated at times but jeering your own players isn't going to help the situation. Support and encourage us during the game and if you want to make your feelings known at full-time then do so, that is all we ask."

Sheridan: Happy with a point

Sheridan: 'They have an experienced manager who knows the game inside out'

Meanwhile, Spireites boss John Sheridan is a very happy bunny while knowing there's still a long way to go yet.

Sheridan told www.chesterfield-fc.co.uk: "If at the start of the season you had offered me the position we are currently in I would have snatched your hand off. We can't moan too much as we are averaging two points a game and if we continue with that we will get out of this division."

Ironicly, the former Oldham manager is aware of his team having to put up with some stick from their own supporters. especially ironic as they sit at the top of the league table!

Sherdian continued: "The vast majority of supporters have been brilliant and I want to congratulate them for the great support we've been getting, both away but especially at our home matches at the B2net Stadium. Let's remember we won't play well every game, and score lots of goals, but if we stick together and say the right things I think we will have a better chance of getting where we want to go, which is out of this league."

Fair enough John, and he continued on the same theme ending.

Sheridan said: "There's a long, long way to go but if we continue to work hard, hopefully we can get out of this division. We have been near the top all season so there's only one way to go if we aren't careful and that's down. I want to enjoy it, and I want the supporters to enjoy it as well."

OK, that's enough about Chesterfield John, let's hear your thoughts on teh team that really matter, the Shrimpers!

He concluded: "It can be a tough game as they are one of those sides that can be a big threat on their day, and hopefully we'll play better than at Accrington. I like the lad Grant in midfield and they have Corr and Sturrock up front, with Coughlin at the back. So they have some experienced players and have an experienced manager who knows the game inside out."

In their the Spireites last match they found themselves two goals down and being outplayed away to Accrington Stanley before two late goals rescued a point. Beware!
