Sturrock looks for Shrimpers away double to 'come up late on the rails!'

Sturrock: New Shrimpers boss
Sturrock: 'All piches all quite dry and bobbly at the moment'

Blues boss Paul Sturrock is still clinging on to a chance of making the play-off positions, more in hope than expectation you believe now after the goalless draw against Aldershot at Roots Hall on Saturday.

And it would probably now mean winning all of our last seven games, the Shrimpers remain in 14th place nine points behind seventh placed Gillingham with a game in hand, that game being the long trip to Accrington Stanley Tuesday evening, followed by play-off challengers themselves, ninth placed Port Vale next weekend.

Sturrock told www.southendunited.co.uk: "It will take a big effort now but it's been done before and we will keep on working away. Teams have come up late on the rails before and if we can win the two away games we have coming up this week then who knows what the league table will look like that."

Luggy even got a go in about the Stanley field of play, the state of pitches being a pet subject of his lately, he followed up earlier criticism of the hallowed Roots Hall turf!

Sturrock said: "They're all quite dry and bobbly at the moment and ours is the same. You have to take three of four touches to control the ball and it's hard to pass the ball square or backwards. I think that showed on Saturday and, in the end, both teams cancelled each other out."

Fair enough, there is obviously a problem with the state of the home pitch at the moment, but most of the faithful would put the recent poor run down to not having a big enough squad to cope with injuries and international call-ups, (OK it was only one player in the Irish under-19's but it still feels good to write it!), than taking a few more passes than necessary!
