Sturrock: Praises goalkeeper

Sturrock: 'In the first half we showed them too much respect'

Blues boss Paul Sturrock heaped praise on his Shrimpers side for their excellent second-half showing that secured an FA Cup replay against Oldham Athletic.

Southend top scorer Ryan Hall's ninth goal of the season cancelled out James Wesolowski's first-half opener for the Latics.

It also ensured a club-record equalling 17th game unbeaten for Blues, who achieved the feat for the first time in 2005.

Sturrock told the PA: "Equalling the record is pleasing but I'm just glad to get the result and get a replay. In the first half we showed them too much respect. I went for a solid formation and it didn't work out. I changed it around at half-time and we were very good after that, and in the end Oldham were holding on. The front two (Blair Sturrock and Neil Harris) played well when they came on and we kept the ball better, which made the difference."

It certainly did and the home side can count themselves unlucky that they didn't secure the win in the end after the Lancashire lads had wasted a number of chances in the opening period.

Roll on the draw.
