Sturrock: Hit the winner against Rotherham

Blair Sturrock: 'I’ve done a lot of work in the pool and on the bike'

Shrimpers striker Blair Sturrock does not expect to be fit for the opening game of the season on August 6th against Hereford United at Roots Hall and the JPT match with Leyton Orient the following Tuesday.

The son of Blues boss Paul limped off before the end of the final game of last season at Wycombe Wanderers with an ankle injury.

With the last campaign's 21-goal man Barry Corr also out, possibily into September there, Luggy will be considering what options he has in the squad, or bring someone new in if the budget allows.

Sturrock told www.echo-news.co.uk“I’m making progress with my ankle but I don’t think I will be ready for the Hereford game if I’m honest. I’m back running now which is good but I’ve missed a lot of the fitness work the boys have already done during pre-season and I’m going to be playing catch-up. The start of the season will therefore be too soon for me but I’m doing everything I can to keep fit and hopefully it won’t be too long before I’m back playing.”

Blair is on the pain-killing injections for now and went over again how the problem was picked up at Adams Park.

Sturrock continued: “Ryan Hall did the initial damage and if the tackle had been on an opposing player I think he probably would have been sent off. Then after that Bilel Mohsni came in on me to finish off the job. I’ve been struggling with it ever since but I’ve done a lot of work in the pool and on the bike, and hopefully that will stand me in good stead."

So is the new striking signing on the cards, or it could be Hall and Johnston with Harris in the middle, or possibily Bomber and one of the youngsters, Kyle Asante or Harry Crawford.

The home friendlies against Ipswich Town Friday and Norwich City next Thursday should give a clue to Luggy's thinking.
