Dickinson: One-year contract

Dickinson: 'I want to score regularly for Southend United'

After the midweek flurry of new signings one stood out above midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala and defender Ryan Leonard, not that there was anything there, but it was striker Liam Dickinson that got the juices flowing, a guy who can put the ball in the net on a regular basis tends to do that, and in our present position we needed one, is he the man though, his recent record isn't brilliant?

As ever, only time will tell, and we're unlikely to get a view in tonights friendly against Norwich due to an ankle problem, hope he's OK for Hereford, but for now he's saying all the right things, which, of course, is the easy part.

Dickinson told www.echo-news.co.uk: “I’ve been passed from pillar to post in the last couple of years but now I want to rekindle myself and get handfuls of goals for Southend. I’ve dropped down to League Two to sign here but I don’t want to still be playing at this level next season because I want to help Southend go up. We have the players here to do it and I want to raise my profile in the game again.”

Luckily he's only got a season contract then, just in case!

Though Liam failed to find the old onion bag during the last campaign, he's hardly played over the last year and a half,  Stockport County fans certainly know what he can do as he helped them to promotion via the play-offs in 2008, 21 strikes that saw Championship club Derby County offer £750,000 for his services, a transfer that still leaves a bitter taste with some Hatters fans, not due to the dosh, long spent now anyway, but the way Dickinson handled himself leading up to it. Humble he wasn't!

And let's face it, he hasn't been banging them in since, the Rams writing him off after just a season, so in Blues boss Paul Sturrock, desperate for a striker with last term's top scorer Barry Corr out, possibily long term, we have to trust.

Dickenson continued: “I’ve had a lot of loan spells and last season I went through a real dry patch. I had a few injuries but that’s no excuse and I want to score regularly for Southend. I’m naturally quite fit so I’m sure I will be in good shape quite quickly. I’m not sure if I will play against Norwich tonight and I need to talk to the manager but I can’t wait to get out there.”

The tall targetman looked as good as signed to League Two rivals Plymouth Argyle this summer, but pulled out of the deal when it looked unlikely he would get paid what was on the contract, hope you've joined the right club mate.
