Shrimpers snap up Spencer: 'If I get games, I'll get goals'

Name: Scott Spencer

Spencer: 'Hopefully the gaffer will give me more of a chance'

Everton boss David Moyes first signed him as a 16-year-old from Oldham but he failed to make it into the Premiership clubs first-team plans and was loaned to Macclesfield and eventually ended up at Rochdale.

But following his exit from the Dale, 21-year-old Spencer has since spent a successful trial spell at Roots Hall and Blues boss Steve Tilson is happy to have signed him until the end of the season.

Tilson told www.southendunited.co.uk: "He has a good appetite and impressed in both the game he played in with the reserves and in training. He's hungry to do well and we've given him the opportunity so it's worked well both ways. It's certainly worth the punt."

Spencer himself is more than happy to be given another shot at league football.

He told the Echo: "I've only had stop-start football lately and as a front-man it makes it hard for you so hopefully the gaffer at Southend will give me more of a chance. I'm confident that if I get games I'll also get goals so that's what I'm aiming for between now and the end of the season."
