Shrimpers sign stiker Benyon from Swindon

Happy New Year to Elliot Benyon; especially when he becomes a Shrimper

Kudos to sufclee on Shrimperzone, the first time we saw that name mentioned as a possible target, forgot we had been after him before, and as Westfield said yesterday this one could have legs, we have 'sources' as well you know, but he didn't expect it to be announced this morning, possibily due to the local Swindon media letting the name out.

The tweet from the official site that brought joy to the faithful after a week of floodlight failure and crap refunds: 'Southend United are set to sign striker Elliot Benyon from Swindon Town for an undisclosed fee when the transfer window opens on 1st January.'

Though there are pictures on the official site of Elliot putting pen to paper the transfer window doesn't open until Sunday so that's the day he officially joins the club on an 18-month contract for an undisclosed fee.

The Wycombe born boy has made five starts for the team he supported as a boy on loan from parent club Swindon Town scoring two goals, but it was at Torquay United that he made his name, scoring 46 goals in 88 appearances!

For the Wiltshire Robins, where he's been at for less than a year joining a team doomed to relegation, he made just seven starts, grabbing one league goal, and he will possibily play against his former club when they visit Roots Hall on Saturday, January 28th in what will be a massive promotion clash.

Only 5ft 9, so must try and play to his strengths, that could test Luggy a touch!

The good news is that, especially with Bary Corr possibily out for the season, but not so great for veteran Neil Harris, Benyon will be able to make his debut against Dagenham & Rdbridge on Bank Holiday Monday January 2nd at Roots Hall; kick-off 15.00.

Hopefully he'll be joined midfielder Michael Timlin, a team mate at the County Ground, as a permanant Shrimper.

A centre-back or wideboy anybody?
