Shrimpers Old Boys Prove A Point

Blues boss Steve Tilson handed striker Matt Paterson his debut, who came to Roots Hall as part of the £175,000 deal that took 17-goal top scorer Lee Barnard to the Saints, as the rest of the team was the same that had started the week before.

The match was goalless at half-time and been mainly forgettable, although the visitors had forced saves out of Steve Mildenhall, one from Stuart Beavon when clean through was Big Steve at his best, though he was to match that a in the second period.

Kevin Betsy returned to start in a more central role than we were used to and seemed to do more in the first half hour for Wycombe than he he did in his entire two years at Roots Hall before fading a touch. Then again playing next to Harry would make a tortoise look more animate.

It was hard to believe that Tilly had rightly started with two wingers when I don't believe Damien Scannell or Francis Laurent actually got behind the full backs once. The majority of dangerous crosses were from left back Scott Malone, pleasing to hear he'll be with us until the end of the season.

For Southend Franck Moussa tested Wycombe keeper Scott Shearer a couple of times, the latter saw Shearer just get a fingertip to the ball but enough for it to go wide.

After the break Southend Laurent showed why he can be so frustrating, at his best he can destroy any left back in the league, at his worse he can smash the ball over the bar from a few yards when the ball had been pushed directly to his feet by Shearer.

Incredible miss, though Prince Harry did his best to match it later on.

Southend did find the target on the hour when a lovely cross by Osei Sankofa found Alan McCormack charging into the box to head home.

Sixty seconds later we had our first taste of life without Barney when his successor, Matt Paterson, was fed by a glorious pass from McCormack, was one-on-one with Shearer, the crowd got to their feet, and he shot wide of the left hand post!

However, only four minutes after his goal Macca, well on the way to be man-of-the-match with an old fashioned terrier like peformance, saw the red mist the Blues faithful have put up with over the years.

Fouling a Wycombe midfielder inside his own half when there was no danger and possession had been won back by the home side, the free kick was played in to the Southend penalty area where, for what now seems a weekly event, it was not cleared as well as it should and the West Ham teenage midfielder Josh Payne, who had arrived on loan at Adams Park only the day before, struck a sensational low shot into the corner of the net that gave Mildenhall no chance.

I hope centre back Jean-Yves M'Voto is ready for Swindon, if not Millwall!

After such a turblant week, though you'd think the lads would be used to it by now, the Shrimpers lost the plot and Wycombe dominated the closing stages.

One former Blue, Lewis Hunt, forced yet another good save from Mildenhall who was now keeping the Chairboys out practically single handed. Or with both fists at times!

Then the moment we had been waiting for. Matty Harrold, completly unmarked from a corner, headed wide when it was easier to score.

But there was still time for one more piece of herorics by Big Steve, a point blank header by Matt Phillips was brilliantly turned away by the Southend keeper and the match finished all square, in the end a fair result but one which will keep Wycombe in the bottom four and the Shrimpers only four points out of it with a tough programme to come.
