Sacré bleu, Blues reward Laurent

The French striker was originally signed on a one-year deal by Blues boss Steve Tilson in September. After forcing his way into the starting line-up, Laurent has scored four goals in his last eight games before the unfortunate incident at Tranmere where he picked up a three match suspension. And, ahead of tomorrow's trip to Leicester City, he has been rewarded for his unexpected form with an extended two-year deal.

Any Shrimper who saw him come on at Bristol Rovers or the home games against Leeds United, where TB called him League One's Thierry Henry, will be surprised at the news and pleased Tilly has got on with it.

Speaking to the Southend Evening Echo Francis said, (without an interpreter): "It is true that I have been offered a contract and I expect to sign it next week," said Laurent, whose current deal was due to expire at the end of the season. I am very happy at Southend and it had always been my dream to play in England so I want to stay. I found it hard on my own (at previous German club FC Mainz) and became quite lonely. I don't have that problem here though. Southend is a nice place and life is less difficult."

Francis has settled into his new surroundings and lives with his Shrimpers team-mate and close friend Jean-Francois Christophe near to Roots Hall.

He is also seeking a return to the score-sheet as he again attempts to impress Tilly who feels the forward has earned his improved contract: "Francis has done superbly for us. When he first came in it was a bit of a gamble but he has shown what he can do. That's why we have offered him a longer contract now and it's close to being sorted out."
