Return to Bermuda for Shrimpers as former Ipswich Town midfielder set for trial

Lambe: Kind words for Jewell

Reggie Lambe: May be seen at Braintree

The small British overseas territory of Bermuda already has a Shrimpers connection with former forward Shaun Goater who scored 11 goals for Tilly's League One Championship winning side over 2005/06.

And it will soon have a second one if reports from Bemudan paper 'The Royal Gazette' is true and the wonderfully named Reginald Thompson-Lambe, Reggie Lambe to you and me, is down for a trial with Southend who are taking on recent Blue Square South Champions Braintree Town Wednesday evening, kick-off 19.45, at their Cressing Road ground.

Lambe has quite rightly been doing the rounds, he's already been turned down by Paul Buckle at League Two rivals Bristol Rovers, where he ended the last campaign on loan, quite a feat as he seems to be signing everybody who walks through the doors.

So on the recommendation of Bemudian businessman Paul Scopes, who has contacts with Bermuda Hogges in Hamilton, the island's capital and a club the Goat turned out for 9 times in his dotage scoting 3 goals, (there's the Shrimpers link for Reggie), he tried his luck at Blue Square Conference team Newport County.

However, even though the 20-year-old impressed in a friendly against another Welsh club in Merthyr Town, he obviously wants to remain in the Football League and Blues boss Paul Sturrock may well be happy enough to take a look, though another midfielder, and another who would describe himself as a winger, is not top of his shopping list with a central striker the main priority. (Though, if it turns out to be correct, it could well be another nail in the coffin of wideboy Rohan Ricketts.)

Scopes told www.royalgazette.com: “I’ve spoken to Anthony (Hudson, Newport boss), and I know he liked Reggie and is disappointed he’s looking elsewhere.

Lambe was released at the end of the last campaign by Championship ipswich Town, having turned out in four Carling Cup starts and two substitute appearances in the League.

With the Gasmen during the end of their ill-fated relegation season that sees them back into the bottom tier, Reggie just warmed the bench, being called on to make a sub appearance seven times.

Lambe said of his release from the Tractor Boys: "I went out on loan to Bristol Rovers hoping it would boost my chances of getting another contract with Ipswich, but it wasn't to be. I really enjoyed my time at the club and gained some valuable experience. (Ipswich boss) Paul Jewell was excellent when he informed of his decision and spoke to me very respectfully. He told me what I needed to improve and I really appreciate that. There has been other offers. I haven't turned a blind eye to them but I want to see what happens with Rovers first. My agent's sorted everything out for me and I should know more in the next two weeks."

Well, we know now, the answer from the Memorial Stadium was negative, so it looks as Luggy could be giving him another chance of playing League footy in 2011/12.

Charming post of the day re reggie from the fansite www.TWTD.co.uk.

KenDubZ writes: 'Just come and sign for Little Oakley. to be honest to Reggie his attitude has got him where he is because I remember when he played for town all he did was moan and cry about everything. Using the word C**T when little kids are about is never a good move either so I could see why town released him and why he is not with another DECENT club yet.'

And you have a good season as well.
