Prosser returns to haunt Port Vale: 'Great day, the longer it was 1-0 the pressure was on them'

Prosser: 'We knew if we stuck at it, we could get something out of the game'

When this site gave him a 4 out of 10 for his disastrous performance against his former club Port Vale last August which ended in a 3-1 defeat and defender Luke Prosser dragged off at half-time many felt he would not be around for the return clash eight months later.

In fact, young Luke was sent on loan to Conference side Rushden & Diamonds which would have seemed to be his natural level, and he fitted in well, six games, one goal, before the Shrimpers appalling injury crisis forced him back.

Only marking time maybe as his present deal comes to an end at the end of the season, but who knows if a couple of assured performances at what was felt an odd position for him of left back may have pursuaded Blues boss Paul Sturrock to give him another go.

A 90th minute equaliser against the Valiants to stop a rot of sixth successive away defeats will not have not done him any harm.

Prosser told BBC Essex: "I don't really get many goals, so I couldn't really have picked a better day for it - right foot as well. Great day, the longer it was 1-0 the longer the pressure was on them really. We felt we did well, we knew if we stuck at it, we could get something out of it."

While Luggy was full of praise for the player.

Sturrock told the PA: "Luke Prosser had an indifferent start to his time with us and he didn't endear himself to the crowd because he made mistakes. He had a poor game against Port Vale when we met earlier in the season and I took him off at half-time. It must have been a big disappointment to him, but he has shown real character to bounce back. He's a nice lad who is a joy to work with and he really wants to be a player. He works ever so hard at his game and he's looking a much better player at left-back than he did at centre-half."

Good luck to the lad who has now put himself in with a chance of a new contract at the end of the season.

Valiants caretaker boss Mark Grew has his say after the 1-1 draw.
