Paterson's Marks Out Of Ten

Last updated : 09 November 2005 By Martin Paterson

Bart Griemink – 6.5

The experienced goalkeeper was once again needed, as Southend’s number 1 Darryl Flahavan was still sidelined because of a hand injury. Bart looked at times to be comfortable between the Southend sticks, making a couple of good saves from Barnet long range shots. However, at other times, he looked edgy and made a couple of mistakes, which could have been costly for the Shrimpers. The first was when he came charging out to meet a cross, and missed his punch at the ball, and the Barnet just headed over before he got clattered by an on flying Griemink. The second was once again an easy cross to claim, he let the ball go through his hands, but luckily the Blues defenders got back and cleared the danger, and saved Bart’s blushes.

Lewis Hunt – 6.5

An average performance from the former Derby man, he never got forward really and overlapped JCR on the right. However he did defend reasonably well, and him and his fellow defenders did manage a clean sheet so I can’t be too over critical of his performance.

Adam Barrett – 7

Was solid at the back and made some crucial blocks. On several occasions Barrett chucked himself in front of the ball, so that Barnet were denied a possible goal. He made one great block from close range in the first half. And was also diving in to block the effort after Griemink had fumbled a cross. Him and Edwards have formed a good partnership at the back, and they won’t want to stop their good form now.

Andy Edwards – 7

Eagle put in another consistent display at the heart of the defence, and also got forward well! No I’m not kidding, Eagle was slipped though near the edge of the box, faked to cross it sucked the Barnet player in and curled a delightful ball into the box, but no one could get on the end of it. It was great to see and Eagle seemed to enjoy it as well. All joking aside, it was a competent display from the experienced campaigner and he will certainly need to put in a few more good performances if he is to help Southend stay top of the table.

Che Wilson – 6.5

An average performance from the new consistent Wilson. He was once again part of a defence, which gained a clean sheet, and he managed not to let the Barnet winger get the better of him on a regular basis. It will be interesting to see how he plays when up against a tough Swansea side next week.

Jamal Campbell Ryce – 7

This was probably the best I have seen JCR play since he joined the Blues on loan from Rotherham. He was direct and had the Barnet defence on the back foot ever time he went forward with the ball. He chased back and made some good tackles as well. His crosses into the box were much better and he was another one that was denied a goal by the linesmen as he was also wrongly flagged off side when in on goal. JCR was alos denied his first goal by Eastwood’s back, as his close range shot hit Freddy, when it was on course to smash the back of the net

Kevin Maher – 7

A Competent display from The Blues Captain. He was a bit of a by passer in the first half, but improved his performance in the second half. His delivery from set pieces was much better this week after his previous disasters over the last two weeks. His corners were dangerous, and his set pieces were in general better than recent weeks.

Luke Guttridge – 8

Guttridge was so pleased with the result he even gave a little dance when thanking the supporters. This man has really given Southend something extra this year. He seems to get on well with everyone, and is a fan’s favourite. He was once again in good form, and nearly scored, but once again Flitney managed to save it all be it fortuitous this time as the shot hit is legs, and deflected up onto the cross bar. He was a driving force in the midfielder, and also the terrier, tracking back making tackles in defensive positions and making tackles in midfield.

Mitchell Cole – 5

Cole wasn’t at the races today, and unable to make any impact on the game whatsoever. He was ineffective on the left wing, and, most of Southend’s attacks throughout the game came from the right with JCR leading the break. Cole, was disappointing and was eventually substituted, all be it maybe a bit late.

Shaun Goater – 7.5

Was unlucky not to get on the score sheet, against an average defence, but a superb Goalkeeper, if Ross Flitney had stayed on the pitch at Old Trafford it could have been a different story, as he was sensational against the Southend, he made numerous saves, mainly from Goater to keep his side in the game. The goat had a header tipped over, a volley saved and another shot saved. The goat linked up well with strike partner Eastwood and they ran the Barnet defence round in circles.

Freddy Eastwood – 8.5 - MOM

Another great performance and another goal for the inform Eastwood who now has scored four on his last two games. Naturally his performance last week, sparked rumours glamour about whether he would be leaving. However Eastwood has played down the speculation, and got on with the job in hand. And put Southend inform with a slightly deflected goal after 2 minutes. His al round play was excellent, and he should have had another when he tapped in from close range, only to be denied by the linesman, who wrongly gave it off side.

Sub 1

James Lawson – 6

Was only on for 5 minutes.

Many thanks too my BTEC teacher Miss Bland for giving me an extension, so i could do this article..
