Local-Boy Barrett joins Shrimpers Revolution

Twenty-four year old Barrett, born in Rayleigh, rejected a new contract from Rovers at the end of last season despite missing just one match, through suspension, in the entire campaign.

As skipper at the Memorial Ground Barrett made 90 first team starts in two season, scoring six goals with one of them coming at Roots Hall in a 2-2 draw back in February 2003.

Barrett also netted against United in his first competitive match for Plymouth Argyle on the opening day of the 1999-2000 season. However following a successful stint at Home Park, Barrett joined Mansfield Town for £10,000 before returning to the South West with Rovers.

A former Leyton Orient trainee, Barrett also spent some time with the USA Academy before moving back to Britain.

With Leon Cort moving to Hull City just last week, Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has acted quickly to make an experienced player his replacement. Indeed it seems quite fitting that Barrett should join another locally born player, Andy Edwards in central defence in a partnership which will be difficult to match in Division Three.
