American goalkeeper Ian Joyce, who will play some part in Friday's friendly at Canvey Island, has signed from Watford on a one year contract.

The 22 year old 6ft3 shot stopper from New Jersey, has had unsuccessful trial spells at Crewe and Millwall before finally getting picked up by Championship club Watford. He trained with Southend at various times last season.

Joyce, who played for US team Seton Hall Pirates until two summers ago and captained college side Don Bosco Prep, has also turned out for non league outfits Grays Athletic and Harlow on a non contract basis.

He earned valuable experience when he trained with the US squad that took on England last May.

Joyce told the Shrimpers' official website: "I think that it's a great opportunity for both me and the club. I hope to come and do a good job for Southend and I'm really looking forward to the season.  I was with Watford last year and we parted ways at the end of the season, but I'm happy to have landed where I am now.  Watford was a great club to kick off my career and now I'm excited to be back in England."

While he should start by warming the bench it's always good to have competition for places, welcome to the Blues Ian and good luck.
