Grant: 'I think I was in shock that Ryan Hall actually passed to me'
He played 49 times as a Chairboy and Anthony Grant would have been pleased to have been passed fit late on from his ankle injuy for the match with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon at Adams Park.
And though he grabbed the first goal on the quarter hour, his first since January against Barnet, eleven minutes later the home side had taken the lead and that was that, making it 3-1 in the second half, gaining the win they needed to celebrate automatic promotion.
Grant told www.echo-news.co.uk: "We started off well and were really on top for the first 20 minutes or so. We were looking good but then it got scrappy and we gave away some bad goals which cost us the game and that was very disappointing."
However, though keeping a low profile for his own strike, he was happy enough with the Chairboys success, hoping his own team will be in a similar position themselves come May 2012, that is if the talented midfielder is still a Shrimper.
Grant continued: "Wycombe is a good club with good fans and I enjoyed my time there a lot so that's why I didn't do anything when I scored. I think I was also in shock that Ryan Hall actually passed to me but I didn't want to rub Wycombe's nose in it by celebrating my goal. I'm obviously a Southend player and I gave my all to try and help us win the game but Wycombe have done well this season and I'd like to say well done to them for winning promotion. Hopefully it can be us in their position next season but we will need to play better than we did here for that to happen."
