Freedman on Blues ambition, good mate Deano, clubs up north and ten years at the Palace

Well we certainly have got some sites going with this signing, Carlisle can't wait for Saturday I'm sure, gives them someone to boo now Bailey's gone, while our own sister site Walsall.mad was a touch disingenuous when it spoke of "Southend react to thumping".

Freedman was speaking to us before the game started but we can take a joke, we'll see who laughs longest come next March. To be fair they did add that a striker of 'proven quality arrives at Roots Hall'.

"Southend ticked boxes than the higher level sides or some teams up north". Who could he mean?

The player himself had been talking to Blues World how his friendship with reserve team coach Dean Austin "played a massive part by getting the ball rolling and filling me on some details that not all the players would get".

However he had always made clear he would only joined a club that, even at 34, matched his ambition, and his wages if truth be told, and Uncle Ron did his bit.

"The chairman has ambitions with the new stadium and to take the team into the Championship and it was that which attracted me. The deal was finalised at five minutes to midnight." said Dougie.

More interesting was the admission that "there was interest from higher up but I had to consider a lot of things, including my family and the people I work with. Southend ticked more boxes than the higher level sides or some teams up north." Surely not Leeds and a certain Mr. Bates.

He did mention his decade with former club Crystal Palace who rewarded his loyalty and cult status with a testimonial against Fulham in the summer.

"I spent 10 years at Palace and I love the club and always will. But I am a professional football player and I wasn't playing I couldn't finish my career there." Adding that his experience should help the young players in the Blues squad.

Dougie will possibily make his debut at Carlisle on Saturday, typical Tilly we now have a team of forwards but five defenders, what a subs bench it should be, and he finished on this high note. "I looked at my options and Southend play the right sort of football that will get the best out of me."

What odds on a 4-3 away win then?
