'Focused on Chelsea': Crewe manager accuses Southend

The Icy Explosion

Not the only explosion from Iceland this week

Southend club officials called in a local referee to survey the Roots Hall pitch and he deemed the surface was unplayable because of frost at noon Friday.

New Football League rules have encouraged clubs to make early decisions on postponements to ensure teams and their supporters don't face wasted journeys.

It is the second time in a week Crewe have been hit by a cancellation. Tuesday night's home clash with Bristol Rovers was also frozen off, leaving new manager Gudjon Thordarson frustrated.

Thordarson spoke to BBC Radio Stoke: "I want this game to take place and I want to start collecting points. Maybe they are more focused on playing Chelsea in the FA Cup on Tuesday night than playing us. (It's Wednesday actually Gudjon.) It's not ideal from my point of view. I think the pitch inspection should have taken place later in the afternoon. It should have taken place at three o'clock. We saw here the other day that there was a huge difference when the sun came out."

Blues boss Steve Tilson said right after the drawn Chelsea cup tie that the Crewe game was more important than the replay.

This was followed by cup hero, the goalscoring centre half Peter Clarke, being quoted in the Southend Evening Echo: "The Crewe game is bigger than the Chelsea one because the league is our bread and butter and is what matters most. We want to start getting better results to get up the table and there is no better time to do it than tomorrow."

Not a good few months for Iceland.
