Trailist Jack Parkinson on the ball
Four new trailists, and one we predicted Sunday, to take the field against Dartford this evening as the Shrimpers start their pre-season schedule against Blue Square South side Dartford, and hope to gain revenge for their 2-0 defeat here last season, just days after Southend manager Paul Sturrock had got enough new players together to field a side!
Strikers Barry Corr and Blair Sturrock are injured and will not start.
First up is Blue Square Bet South club Welling United defender and skipper Jack Parkinson.
Parky joined the club as a teenager from VCD in July 2008 will take part in both this week's friendlies after signing a new one-year deal with Welling at the end of the last campaign.
Welling boss Jamie Day told www.kentonline.co.uk/kentonline: "They want to have a look at him first before finalising anything. If we can progress players on then it shows we're doing a half-decent job. Obviously it weakens our squad but it gives others the chance to shine and it frees up some money to bring players in that we wanted to previously but were unable to afford."

Graham Coughlan told www.echo-news.co.uk before the game: “Things are a lot more settled compared to our last visit to Dartford. That was the first time we had ever played together and nobody knew who anybody was. Thinking back to nights like that does make you realise how far we’ve come but we need to keep on moving forward. There’s a lot of hard work ahead and it begins with the friendly at Dartford tonight.”
