The Shrimpers have swooped to capture the 32-year old who began his career with WK Emmen in Holland before signing for Birmingham City in November 1995 following his end-of-season release from League One side Swindon Town.

Griemink was first choice custodian at the County Ground for three season's until last season when he regularly warmed the bench in favour of England Under-21 Stopper and one-time Blues target Rhys Weston.

Griemink, who has also featured for Peterborough United - whom he signed for a fee of £25,000 - has now made well in excess of 200 League appearance and signed for Swindon after inpressing on loan during 1999-2000.

Boss Steve Tilson told the Club's Official Website - www.southendunited.co.uk - "Bart's played over 250 games for some good club's so he knows the circuit well.  He dominates his box well which is something we have lacked".

However, in contrast to the latter quote, last season's PFA Players Yearbook suggests that Griemink 'must learn to dominate his penalty area'.  The same book though describes Griemink as a keeper capqable of world class saves and he will undoubebly be an assets to United.

The Shrimpers are also on the verge of sealing a deal for former Colchester United goalker Richard McKinney, 25, who originates from Northern Ireland and has also played for Manchester City,  However McKinney is currently on holiday and more on that story as we have it!
