Dickinson: Netted Southend's second

Dickinson: 'Their keeper caught me so it was definitely a penalty'

Shrimpers striker Liam Dickinson grabbed a brace against the deflated Cobblers Saturday afternoon in his side's 5-2 win that returned them to their rightful place at the top of League Two.

However, the former Derby hitman knows he has to keep performing if he is to keep his place in the side with four new forwards arriving at Roots Hall since the January transfer window opened just a couple of weeks ago.

Dickinson told www.echo-news.co.uk: “If you include Barry (Corr) and Harry (Crawford) there's seven strikers here now and we're vying for two positions so you have to play well to get picked. Everybody is chomping at the bit to be involved so I know I will have to perform to stay in the side but I think that's a good situation to be in.”

Liam's first against Northampton came from a regular source, a penalty, he's grabbed five of his goals frfom the spot this seaon, just under half of his total amount, and Dickinson is under no doubt the ref got it right.

He explained: “Their keeper caught me so it was definitely a penalty. I made sure I got up quick enough to take it because David Martin seemed to be going towards the ball to try and have it. He had no
chance of that happening though and I'm sure he'll soon learn that!”

Liam's second came from a great assist by loanee Jack Sampson, and he was more than happy to acknowledge a real talent at the club even at the tender age of 18!

Dickinson said: “Jack has looked sharp in training and it was the same when he came on. He must be doing something right because he's with Bolton in the Premier League and I enjoyed being alongside him.”

As we enjoyed watching them, along with some bloke called Bilel Mohsni.

For now Dicko just wants to keep hitting the back of that old onion bag.

He concluded: “Getting double figures was my first target and now I'm there I'm going for 15. I will keep changing it but it's nice to be back above Ryan Hall in the scoring charts again and I was quick to remind him about that after the game!”

Remember Mark Phillips as well Liam, then again, after that miss in the second half he may be on 8 for a while!
