Dickinson: 'I’m naturally quite an athletic lad'

It was a surprise to see the Shrimpers new striker Liam Dickinson turning out in the dire 0-0 draw against Ryman Premier side Canvey Island last Saturday, especially after the spin given by the club that he had an ankle problem that would probably keep him out of the League Two opener against Hereford United at Roots Hall next weekend, let alone the final game of the club's pre-season schedule.

However, Blues boss Paul Sturrock made it quite clear after the game that there was still work to do re the 6ft 4 forwards fitness if we are to see him against the Bulls, a start on the subs bench still seems the favourite option, something accepted by the player himself.

Dickinson told www.echo-news.co.uk: “It was good to be out there playing again as it was my first game for about three months. I’m naturally quite an athletic lad, yet everyone needs matches to get match fit and I’m no different, but I would still like to be involved in some way when we start the season against Hereford on Saturday.”

So nearly a Plymouth player just a few weeks ago, but they have even less dosh than we do, Liam is an ambitious lad, and quite right too,

Dickinson said last week: “I’ve been passed from pillar to post in the last couple of years but now I want to rekindle myself and get handfuls of goals for Southend. I’ve dropped down to League Two to sign here but I don’t want to still be playing at this level next season because I want to help Southend go up. We have the players here to do it and I want to raise my profile in the game again.”

And let's hope, along with the Bomber and Big Baz, he hits the old onion bag enough to do just that.
