Crewe Match Off: Macca Misses Chelsea

Essex based ref Fred Graham decided that the recent extreme weather has taken its toll on the Roots Hall pitch and the weekend match with Crewe could not go ahead.

He told the official site: "The players safety has to be paramount in the circumstances. The goalmouth at the South End of the stadium is frozen solid and with more cold weather predicted overnight that won't get any better. Crewe and their supporters will have to travel a long way to the game and that has to be taken into consideration."

The match being called off has serious implications for the tough tackling Alan McCormack as he was due to be suspended for Crewe after collecting five yellow cards but will now have to miss the cup replay v Chelsea on Wednesday.

A new date for the re-arranged fixture is yet to be decided.
