Clarke: 'I can see a brighter future for Southend'

The Roots Hall faithful voted Peter Clarke our player of last season and gave him warm applause when he turned out against his former club at the weekend in the 2-1 win for the Terriers.

He writes as he plays though, never holding back.

Clarkey said in the Huddersfield programme: "I can see a brighter future for Southend, especially if they can hold onto the manager and Brushy because the lads want to play for the two of them. If the club can also hold onto some of their better players they have a chance to build on things. They have a new stadium in the pipeline and they could be back on the up again in the future."

However, it's his final words that have a sting in the tail.

The former Shrimper centre back concluded: "But the situation at the moment doesn't make for good reading and it's not until you speak to some of the lads that you fully realise what a sorry state the club is in."
