Boothroyd: 'We're not cannon fodder'

Boothroyd: 'We’re evolving nicely and there are no wrong ‘uns in there'

The second placed Shrimpers face struggling Northampton Town this coming weekend, just as the Cobblers won 2-1 at Morecambe, their first taste of three points since beating Barnet at Underhill also 2-1 on Saturday, October 1st!

So not surprisingly the Cobblers boss Aidy Boothroyd has a spring in his step and even with setbacks such as the long-term injury to their very good goalkeeper Shane Higgs, Southend should be in for a game.

And let's be honest when it's against a team lead by an ex-Col U manger, who had the odd good result against the real Essex boys, he'll have his team well up for it.

Boothroyd told www.northamptonchron.co.uk: “What Saturday’s result does is it sends a little message out. It sends a message to our own players, they’ll start thinking ‘I can do this, we might be able to do better than what the manager says and thinks. And it also sends a message to the teams around us that we’re not cannon fodder. That means having to deal with the lightning strikes, the Shane Higgs and Christian Dailly incidents and all the rest of it and get on with it.”

Presuming that means Christian Dailly didn't sign for them, is he still training with us?

Who did sign with them is big striker Akwaski Asante, on a month's loan from Championship Birmingham City, midfielder Ben Harding on loan from League One Wycombe Wanderers until the end of the season, and defender Kelvin Langmead on an 18-month deal, after his contract was cancelled by another second tier club in Peterborough United and he was picked up on loan by the Town back in August.

Along with them and the sea air, and the odd sing-song, it all seemed to have done the business leading to three points!

Boothroyd reckons: “It helped having an overnight stay. We had some good singers, we had some shocking singers and the people who were staying in the hotel were supposed to be going out but they decided to stay in and listen to the lads. That sort of thing is important because it binds the players together. We’re evolving nicely and there are no wrong ‘uns in there, there are no bad characters and that’s a pre-requisite if you’re going to be successful.”

No argument there, but unless they are planning a stay at Milton Keynes the day before the game, certianly no coastline there, but plenty of cows, they are at home this time, and face a while different ball game against the resurgant Shrimpers with their all-new striking line-up!
