The Southend faithful gathered at the New Cross were happy to take a first look at trialist Jamie Clapham but got a surprise when Anthony Grant, who played for us while on loan from Chelsea last season, joined him on starting the match.

As reported Macca was given the night off but Revell's groin strain continued to see him absent from the team.

This was much better from the Blues after the poor affair at Braintree at the weekend. Dominating most of the match they deserved more than the one goal win they ended up with when Damian Scannell continued his good start to the season by chasing on to a high ball from Grant before an excellent finish into the bottom corner in the 39th minute.

Adding to this a shot just wide and hitting the post young Damien could end up saving Tilly a few bob after losing both his first choice wide players at the end of last season.

The good Lord Lee Barnard also continued his good start with a number of chances that were not converted this time around but he looked sharp, played the full 90 minutes and did not get injured.

Paul Furlong came on for a lively O'Keefe for the second half and was denied his first goal for the club by a sharp save from Billericay keeper Ronnie Forster.

The home side had their chances, one brought a stunning save near the end from Blues shot-stopper Steve Mildenhall that will help him to settle in with the club and the fans, but overall Southend were well worth their win.

Tilly spoke after the game that he was happy with both the palyers on trail, Clapham and Grant.

"I thought Jamie did well, he comes with loads of experience and we will be having another look at him at Chelmsford."

Tilly also confirmed his continued interest in Anthony Grant.

"This was a chance for us to see Anthony in action again, he's available on a free transfer from Chelsea and he will be training with us today and we will be holding more talks.  I thought he did well for us too."

On to the Essex capital for Monday's friendly with Chelmsford City.

Southend: Mildenhall, Francis (Sankofa H-T), Clarke, Barrett, Clapham, Scannell, Grant (Moussa H-T), Bailey, O'Keefe (Furlong H-T), Walker, Barnard.
