Barrett: Will hold talks with Palace
Barrett: 'I was captain and everyone knows how much Southend meant to me'

Presently on loan at League One Leyton Orient, former Shrimpers skipper Adam Barrett is still hoping he'll get another season to prove his worth in the Championship with Crystal Palace, as long as they stay up that is.

In the meantime the tough tackling defender has got a touch under the collar, and who can blame him, at suggestions by Shrimpers supremo Ron Martin that he made a couple of days ago that team and management were not putting in 100% towards the end of the last disastorous season that eneded in relegation to the basement division.

Though you couldn't blame one or two of them seeing as they weren't getting paid, and certainly displays towards the end showed a squad whose morale was rock bottom, including the loan figure of Steve Tilson on the touchline who was now without his trusted lieutenant in Paul Brush as the Shrimpers ship sunk into the basement division.

However, Adam will have none of it, and took the chance to give his version of events.

Barrett told www.echo-news.co.uk: "I was captain of that team and everyone knows how much Southend meant to me, so there is no way I didn't try when I went out there. In fact, I think all of the lads and the management grafted and worked their socks off at all times in what were very difficult circumstances. There was a lot going on and Ron's entitled to his opinion, but I don't think anyone gave up. It was just unfortunate the way things worked out."

Don't worry Adam, the true faithful know who to blame for what's happened at the club in recent times, but I do think it's safe to say it's doubtful ex-Captain Adam will return to Roots Hall in any capacity while Chairman Ron is in charge.
