Adam Barrett: Farewell to the skipper, best of luck mate

Adam McCormack: And best of luck to everyone's favourite rottweiler

Even though we had all accepted it was highly unlikely we would see Captain Adam and Macca ever play again in a Southend shirt this still hurts.

The ex-Shrimpers skipper had two years remaining on his contract with SUFC, while the Dublin-born McCormack had 12 months left.

www.southendunited.co.uk released this statement Thursday morning:

Following a request from both Adam Barrett and Alan McCormack Southend United have today cancelled thier contracts by mutual consent.

As a result both Adam and Alan can now leave the football club and seek employment elsewhere on free transfers.

The Club is now subject to a salary cap in League Two and both players were high earners.

The Club's management wishes them well in finding new employment on similar terms.

Ouch! Notice the 'finding new employment on similar terms'. Ungracious even at the end.

In Adam Barrett this is a living legend to the Shrimpers faithful who has been Tilly's voice on the pitch over the five succesful seasons that brough back to back promotions, involving three trips in two seasons to Cardiff's Millenium Stadium.

Both should have no trouble finding new clubs especially at League One level, but at their present level of wages who knows how long they'll be waiting, but at least they should get paid on time when they do find someone!

Blimey, that 200k offer from Millwall for Macca in the last January transfer window looks good now!

Anyway, we've said farewell in earlier threads which we'll link below.

This is just another sad day, in a sad year, after a sad season.

Many good memories lads, and it goes without saying that S24 wishes both Adam and Alan the best for the future and thanks them for their past efforts on behalf of Southend United Football Club and their thousands of loyal supporters.

A loyalty that is being stretched to breaking point by chairman Ron Martin and his backers, that is if he concentrate on the club very much at the moment, being on police bail and all that!
