FootyMAD >  Shrimpers24 - Southend United  >  The West Stand >  Back in Time
The Shrimpers held a slight advantage going into the second leg of the Division Three play-off semi-finals after a goalless draw at Sixfields Stadium on Sunday, May 15th, 2005.
Southend's 2-0 win over Bradford last Friday was their first victory of this season, around the same time in 1936 another Shrimpers side were doing the same in Wales, but they scored nine!
Except it wasn't, in Europe war which had been looming for the last year was about to explode and the whole country was apprehensive but all you can do is carry on as normal as long as you can and that is just what Southend United did!
It was anything but a friendly six years ago when the Shrimpers hammered four at Nene Park in a season that would end in promotion from the basement division.
Not to mention a new ground as well, but don't get too excited we are talking about 1934 here, the manager was Mr. David Jack and the new ground was the Stadium at Grainger Road.
November 2001 - Southend United 0 Plymouth Argyle 1: New boss Paul Sturrock has been to Roots Hall before with his then Pilgrims side nine years ago on their way to the League Two championship. Are there tips to be picked up for this coming season.
Back in Time: Blackpool surprised everyone by gaining promotion to the Premiership via the play-offs on Saturday by seeing off Cardiff, only four short seasons ago there seemed to be only one seaside club hoping to head for the heighest league!
Back in Time Special: The former Blues striker Eddie Firmani has been talking to the Guardian about his playing and coaching career around the world, including a spell alongside England boss Fabio Capello.
Back in Time Special: Not Southend related but a good read about how just loving the simple pleasure of two teams kicking a ball around keeps us all involved, even after a season like ours!
Back in Time: Southend off to play at St.Mary's after being relegated. Sound familiar? Only three years ago we were having a party on the south coast after leaving the Championship, let's hope this time it's a different result!
Back in Time: Referee Trevor Kettle flashed his red card sending Garry Richards off, but ten men Southend still grabbed the points over the Latics just two seasons ago.
Back in Time: How things can change in such a short time. Southend United closed in on their place in the 2007/08 League One play-offs with a 2-0 win over Brighton on a barmy Tuesday evening at Roots Hall.
Back in Time: Slightly different need for the points when we played this game against Brentford over four years ago; same result would be nice!
Back in Time: If the worst ever happened and Roots Hall became a Sainsbury's before Fossett Farm was finished, would the Essex capital be an option? It was during the last war!
Back in Time: A couple of long forgotten trips which still make you proud to be a Shrimper, but sadly not the one in the seventies!
Back in Time: Beating Yeovil has been fine, at their place! But Southend have always struggled at home, with this game five years ago their first win against the Glovers at Roots Hall in the league!
Back in Time: Southend first met Walsall in the Third Division South in season 1927-28, over 80 years ago.
Back in Time: But Blues beat Cumbrians, and I'll take that again! It was their first win in four matches yet manager David Webb still didn't want to hang around, surprise!
Back in Time: Two games against Exeter at the start of Season 1928-29 brought two wins and took them to an early second place in the table, were the fans happy? No, the hooligans were slagging off the players.
Back in Time: The Second World War officially started on September 1st, 1939. Over a month later there were a couple of small skirmishes taking place on football fields in Essex!
Back In Time: Boxing Day 2006 was the last time we visited Norwich City three months after a cracking 3-3 draw between the clubs. This game was not as exciting but still a hard fought for point, in Sodje's case literally!
Back In Time: Approaching 79 years ago the Kursaal hosted an FA cup game between Southend United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Back In Time: Read about the Shrimpers supporter who cycled 250 miles in awful weather to see his heroes, and how Colchester were still not allowed into the football league!
Back In Time: Tapping up footballers has always been news but this entrepreneurial young lady took it to a new level 72 years ago.
Back In Time: It's a well known fact that Swindon were Southend's first opponents in the Southern League but they were also the last as well in 1923.
