Olympics delay 2012/13 season start

It missed us first time around we have to admit, but following the publication of the 2012 London Olympic Games timetable a couple of months ago it seems we're going to have to wait until the middle of August, a two week delay at least, for the 2012/13 season to start as the closing ceremony is down for August 12th.

The Games themselves, the first in the UK since 1948, start on July 27th.

The Euro 2012 tournament, which England should be participating in to crash out on penalties in the quarter-finals, takes place in Poland and the Ukraine between June 8th and July 12th of that year, making it a sizzling summer of sport.

The League's Head of Communication John Nagle said: "Football League clubs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of delaying the start of the 2012/13 season in order to support the London Olympics. This decision has been taken to ensure that police and transport links are not overstretched during such an important event for the country."

So there you have it, longer hols next year, the first we've seen since the season ended in mid-April before the 2002 World Cup, and maybe a season of fewer weeks, but don't worry, Uncle Ron will come up with an excuse to increase the season card prices.
