Latics looking for continued cup success: 'We have to make sure we're ready for Southend United'

Furman: 'It's important that we don't think too hard about Liverpool'

There may be some Shrimpers who can't hold their excitement at the thought that Premier League legends Liverpool await at Anfield if they can beat Oldham in their FA Cup second round replay at Boundary Park Tuesday evening, but it's the same for the Latics as well!

They are in great form at the moment, though only 12th in the third tier the Lancashire lads have lost only once in ten games and are only five points off the play-off zone, but like Southend, away to Cheltenham away Saturday, they have an important league fixture to worry about first, and a real war of the roses it is too, Sheffield Wednesday at home.

However, Oldham skipper Dean Furman, even with a possible Wembley date in March only 180 minutes away, (see below), is confifent it's one match at a time!

Furman said: "Everyone was excited when the draw came out, but we've not got there yet. We have to make sure we're ready for Southend and we've got big games before that too. It's important that we don't think too hard about Liverpool and instead focus on making sure we continue our good run of form. We've been playing well and hopefully that will carry on. We're only human and obviously the possibility of playing Liverpool is there. We're just thinking about what we need to make sure we get there."

Dickov: Team fired-up to win

Dickov: 'There's a real buzz in the changing room'

Meanwhile, Latics boss Paul Dickov says Oldham are buzzing after defeating Bradford City 2-0 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern area semi-finals, on the same night that Southend said  farewell to the competition with a 2-1 defeat at home to Swindon Town.

Oldham now face a two-legged area final against League One rivals Chesterfield, managed by Boundary Park legend John Sheridan, as they chase their first Wembley appearance since 1994.

Midfielder Tom Adeyemi, who later revealed he had been sick seven times during the half-time break, fired Oldham ahead after 61 minutes before Shefki Kuqi sealed Bradford's fate.

Dickov said: "We are delighted to be through and there's a real buzz in the changing room. We are a good side and we want the players to keep believing that, although it's my job to keep their feet on the ground. They deserve to enjoy this because, without playing as well as we can, our work-rate and attitude were top class. You have to credit Bradford because they made it very hard but we stood up to it and I'm proud of every player. Our central midfield of Tom Adeyemi and James Wesolowski were magnificent and Tom capped it with a great finish for his goal. Tom was unbelievably ill at half-time - I've never seen anything like it - so to go back out and play like that was fantastic."
