Freedman on Barrett: 'He wants the opportunity to be involved regularly but can't guarantee that'

Barrett: Orient switch
Barrett: Still at the Palace, for now

A report in the South London Press earler this month, who got the Harris story wrong but were spot on with our new loan signing from Crystal Palace Alassane N’Diaye, so it looks as if they have a stronger source at Selhurst Park, had Mad Dog's Notts County closing in on the signature of our former skipper Adam Barrett.

In fact you can throw in former Shrimpers striker Lee Bradbury's AFC Bournemouth, what a fine job he's doing down there, sniffing around ex-Captain Adam as well.

Now 31, the legendary former Shrimpers defender was probably up for League One, the Championship always seemed a division too far, and rarely saw first team action as an Eagle even being sent out on loan to Leyton Orient towards the end of last season.

Personally I'd fancy Palace reserves than the Borient but hey, you want to play first team footy, however low one has to sink. I understand Adam.

Anyway, it's not gonna happen with either club, and the Dagenham born centre-back has started pre-season training with Crystal Palace Wednesday, no wimpy Friday wait for them, after potential moves to both third tier clubs collapsed.

It seems agreeing on personal terms was the problem with both Magpies and Cherries, legends don't come cheap, and so it's back to the Palace for him where another ex-Shrimpers striker in Dougie Freedman is in charge, and has made clear it will not be easy for Barrett, and the future could mean some more bench warming unless someone coughs up the dosh.

Freedman told www.southlondonpress.co.uk: "Adam is a valued member of the squad but didn't play as many games he would have liked. He wants the opportunity to be involved regularly but I can't guarantee that."

So good luck ex-Captain Adam, who at least passed on a good word on about the club to N’Diaye, and seeing as we didn't pay him for several months a couple of years ago, you have to admire that in the man.

Then again, that's why he's a legend.

Barrett told www.echo-news.co.uk a couple of weeks ago: “Alassane is a strong imposing lad who I think could do well for Southend if he signs. I didn’t really see the best of him last season to be honest. I think he felt a little bit isolated when George Burley was in charge and he become quite frustrated playing as a holding midfielder, which didn’t really suit his game, before he fell out of favour. But the year before, under Paul Hart, I’ve been told he did really well. He scored a few important goals and if he gets his confidence back — which he should do by playing games — then I really do think he could do well for Southend because he’s a young lad who is desperate to play on a more regular basis.”
