Ex-Captain Kev after Gillingham: 'Obviously I was disappointed with the contract offered'

Maher: Considering Gills options

Kevin Maher: Looking for another club, Tilly's Lincoln?

After failing to agree terms on a new contract, less dosh, former Shrimpers captain and hard working midfielder Kevin Maher has come to the end of his two-year deal with League Two rivals Gillingham who continue to look to rebuild for the upcoming campaign.

However, the now 34-year-old ex-Captain Kev made his way to Somerset to take up the offer of a pre-season trail with Yeovil Town.

At this stage of his career a return to the third tier would have been a bonus, but it's not to be, well not with the Glovers anyway, with Yeovil boss Terry Skiverton saying 'thanks but no thanks' to up to four trialists.

Always remembered as the captain of a successful Shrimpers side when Tilly and Brush were at the height of their powers at Roots Hall, the pictures of Kevin hlding aloft the League One Championship trophy will live long in the memory. (As will that pass to set Freddy Eastwood on goal in an eventaul losing cause at home to Coventry City in October 2006).

In fact, joining T&B at Lincoln would be a old boys reunion, all those sideway passes to Laurent, but I doubt they could afford him.

In an interview with Gills fanzine Gills365 Maher said: “I wanted to stay (with Gillingham), obviously I was disappointed with the contract I suppose but I was warned there would be a cut. I’m not sure if I would have actually taken it, because it was more of a token gesture really if you look at what they’ve offered people that have come into the club. If they had turned around and said ‘that’s it, final offer’, then at least I would have known.”

Having just become a dad to a baby daughter for the first time, best of luck Kev from all at S24.
