You could grab a pint in the town centre before going to the game and the best could be, certainly to grab a local train,the strongly recommended Head of Steam at 7 Lime Street next to the station.
First sighted before the Huddersfield match last season this is a northern, at the moment, chain of pubs. They operate in the actual stations and very good they are.
Something for everyone; a cafe for a coffee and cake, a section with the coldest lagers for the lads and a real ale section for the old gits. The choice can be limited depending on how on the ball the relevant manager is but time for a pint or two before getting one of the four trains an hour to Rock Ferry, the platform ten minutes walk away. (Last April they had a choice of four ales dedicated to St. George, bit late for specials dedicated to Guy Fawkes but you never know!)
The Sportsmans Arms on Prenton Road East are recommended for away fans and can be seen on the way to and from Rock Ferry station to the stadium.
However, the two pubs closest to the ground are The Mersey Clipper, situated behind the Main Stand, the one for those coming in by coach. No real ales last time but plenty of largers and ciders with plenty of room front, back and inside.
Next door is the Prenton Park which, as the name suggests, is popular with the home support.
